FC Daehler Mortuary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sonya Lee Stapleton, who left us on June 28, 2025, at the age of 66. Born on April 27, 1959, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Sonya was a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a lifelong resident of her cherished Portsmouth, where she dedicated herself to her family and home.

Sonya was known for her warm spirit and unwavering love. As a devoted housewife, she poured her heart into caring for her children and embraced her role as a grandmother with joy and enthusiasm. She took great pride in taking care of her grandkids while her children worked, always cheering them on as they participated in various sports. Her passion for family extended to warm gatherings, where her famous pumpkin rolls became a Thanksgiving staple; they will be fondly remembered as a symbol of the love she poured into each dish.
Sonya found great joy in the simple pleasures of life-bowling with friends, savoring a refreshing Diet Dew, and enjoying a Marlboro Light cigarette (always in a box). Her light-hearted spirit and laughter will be missed by all who knew her.

She was born April 27, 1959 to William R. and Leeta (Nee Mathis) Stapleton in Portsmouth, OH. She was preceded in death by parents and on daughter, Erica Stanfield.

Sonya is survived by her loving daughter Stephanie and Kevin Preston, and her cherished son-in-law, Kevin Preston. She will also be deeply missed by her grandsons: Devin (Torree) Cobern, Darion Robinson, Andre (Maria) Robinson, Jaden Stanfield and Jakob (Libby) Stanfield; great grandchildren: Liam Cobern, Alayna Robinson and Jaxson Robinson; sisters: Patricia "Patty" Watkins and Kathy King; brother James "Butch" Stapleton, as well nieces, nephews and a host of friends and her beloved Cat Abby.

A Celebration of Sonya's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will come together to honor her memory and share stories of her kindness. In this time of mourning, we ask that you keep Sonya's spirit alive in your hearts, carrying forward her legacy of love, warmth, and devotion to family.

Rest in peace, Sonya Lee Stapleton. You will be forever cherished and missed.
