Ramona Charlotte Newman Horton (Monie) 94, passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2021. Monie was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on July 1, 1927 and was the last surviving child of Mary and Denver Newman. She was sister to Eileen Newman, Betty & Herb Neiswander, Paul & Maxine Newman, Jeanne & Irving Drew and D.E. & Pinkie Newman. Monie was a 1945 graduate of Portsmouth High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of Kentucky and member of Kappa Delta sorority. She married the love of her life William Jackson Horton (Jack) in 1949 and was the World’s Best Mom to Cassie & Frank Peters, Mary Carol & Kim Kays and Jackie & Betsy Horton. She was Granny to Adam & Angie Peters, Zach & Ashley Horton, Elizabeth Peters, Sarah & Chris Tieke, Hannah & Ian Davis, Molly & Nick Felton, Jackson & Laura Peters and Joey Peters. She was Great Granny to Beck & Emerson Peters, Harrison & Kenton Horton, Charlotte Tieke, Andrew Peters and Elliott Davis. She was also dearly loved by her many nieces and nephews and their children and spouses. Ramona taught Phys. Ed., Health, and Biology at Portsmouth East High School from 1960 to 1985. She also served as the cheerleading sponsor and Dean of Girls at East. She was adored and remembered by her students throughout the years. Monie was known for her happy, fun-loving, and ever-pleasant nature. She was an avid U.K. and Ohio State sports fan, even keeping her own personal scorebook for hundreds of Kentucky Wildcat basketball games. She loved swimming and cherished spending time with her family at the annual trips to the beach. She couldn’t wait to make the quilt for the next new baby in the family. She loved jigsaw puzzles, scrabble and card games, especially with her grandchildren. Ramona loved life and was always excited about each new phase of her journey. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by everyone that she touched. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Ramona’s name to Bluegrass Care Navigators (Hospice) www.wbgcarenav.org.
