John Howard Newberry, 67, of Portsmouth, OH, died Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the VA Medical Center in Chillicothe, OH.

John was born November 28, 1955 in Portsmouth, OH, a son of the late Howard Floyd and Kathaleen Elizabeth (Gleim) Newberry. He was a 1974 graduate of Wheelersburg

High School where he played varsity football and baseball. He was a member of the James Dickey American Legion Post 23 1974 state baseball championship team. John continued playing varsity baseball at the college level at William Carey University, University of Cincinnati, and Marshall University. He served in the U. S. Army Infantry Division and was stationed in South Korea.

John is survived by two brothers, Joe and Jerry (Roberta) Newberry of Portsmouth; two sisters, Jan Adams of Wheelersburg, and Jamie (Travis) Garnes of Huntington, WV; nieces and nephews, Aaron and Melissa Adams of Wheelersburg, Christian, Chloe, and Camryn Garnes of Huntington, WV; great-nephew, Mason Adams, great-niece, Macie Adams both of Wheelersburg, and many cousins.

A funeral service will be held Friday, August 18, 2023, at 11 AM, in the Chapel at

Hill View Retirement Center, 1610 28th Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662.

Friends and family may call from 10-11 AM.

Rev. Ralph Clay and Rev. John Gowdy officiating.

Interment service will be in the chapel at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Military honors will be provided by James Dickey American Legion Post 23.
