James Vernon Hicks Jr., a beloved resident of Portsmouth, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on June 29, 2025 in his home, surrounded by family. Born to the late James Vernon Hicks Sr. and Wyvetta Spradlin Hicks, James shared a deep bond with his parents and embodied their values of service and dedication.

A proud Marine, James served his country honorably from 1974 to 1976, following in his father's footsteps. He later dedicated many years to Save A Lot in Portsmouth, Ohio, where he was a valued team member.

James is survived by his sister, Dr. Debra Scurlock, and her husband, Dr. Steven , of Scurlock of Carlsbad, California; his niece, Bronwyn Scurlock, and her daughters, Avery, Ayanna, and Aislynn, of Fort Collins, Colorado; and his nephews, Barrett Scurlock of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Brandon Scurlock, his wife, Janel, and their daughters, Lauryn and Gwendolyn, of Pinedale, Wyoming. Known fondly as "Uncle Jimmy," James cherished his family deeply.

A man of big dreams, James found peace and joy in the ocean breeze during family vacations to California and Florida beaches.

A private gravesite gathering will be held for family, where James will be honored with a military salute in recognition of his service.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."
