After his time in the service as a Marine, he became a skilled truck driver, spending many years on the road for Midland Grocery, he worked at the William Shoe Factory and lastly spent time as a custodian First Christian Church, on Third Street located in Portsmouth, where he took pride in his service there.

In his leisure time, Jim was known for his love of hunting, where he found solace in nature and joy in the company of friends. He was an active Mason of the Navoo Lodge, holding close the bonds of brotherhood that brought him great fulfillment.
