Howard Stapleton

February 21, 1938 - November 27, 2023

Howard Stapleton, McDermott resident, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2023, at the age of 85. Born on February 21, 1938, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Howard led a fulfilling life marked by hard work, dedication, and a strong love for his family.

"The Rocking chair is not for me", a quote from him describes how much Howard was a true go-getter who dedicated many years of his life as a truck driver to the coal industry. His tireless work ethic and commitment to his profession were admired by all who knew him. In addition to his work in the coal industry, Howard also served his community as a valued city worker for Portsmouth and a private contractor. Whether he was repairing roads, maintaining public areas, or lending a helping hand wherever needed, Howard consistently demonstrated his dedication to improving the lives of those around him. His diligence and contributions were instrumental in the city of Portsmouth.

Outside of work, Howard found joy in spending time with his family and embracing outdoor activities. Whether he was tackling house projects, painting, or taking care of his lawn, Howard could always be found in his element. His zest for life and constant pursuit of new adventures was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Howard is survived by "His Baby", loving and devoted wife of sixty-four years, Rosalie (Nee Fodge) Stapleton, and loving children, Robin Stapleton of McDermott and Mike (Julia) Stapleton of Lucasville, one brother Glenn Stapleton, eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Catherine Stapleton, many siblings and two sons: Howard Owen and James Jeffrey Stapleton. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched with his kindness and empathetic nature.

In accordance with Howard's final wishes, a private service is being planned for a later date to celebrate Howard's remarkable life.

Howard Stapleton will always be remembered as a compassionate family man, a hardworking member of the community, and someone who cherished every moment he spent outdoors. His legacy will continue to inspire and remind us of the value of perseverance, love, and the importance of embracing life to the fullest.

Should you wish to honor Howard's memory, the family kindly requests donations be made to SOMC Hospice in Howard's name.
