It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Elsie Irene Adkins, aged 96, who went home to be with the Lord on September 14, 2026. Resident of Hillview Retirement Community, and previous longtime Portsmouth resident. Born on June 19, 1930, in the same beloved city, Elsie touched countless lives with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Ida Mae (Nee Craft) White, her loving husband of over 30 years when he passed in 1984, Russell Adkins, brothers: Arthur Ray and Leroy Curtis White, and loving sisters: Goldie Rolfe, Eva Slusher, Marie Inlow, Cova Buffington, Ethel Mae White and Tina Barstow.

Elsie will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Rosemary Hamby, daughter, Juanita Adkins of Ezel, KY; grandchildren, Rachelle Adkins of Georgia, and Kendra Wheeler of Georgia, and sweet great grandchildren Rohan and Landon, several nieces and nephews, and friend Bradly White of Texas. Elsie and her sister Rosemary enjoyed countless adventures filled with laughter, especially during their cherished outings, be it a trip to the shops or a delightful meal.

For many years, Elsie devoted herself to the nurturing of children as the owner and manager of a daycare facility in Michigan, creating a space where laughter and learning blossomed. After her time in Michigan, she returned to her roots in Portsmouth, where she continued to shine brightly in the community, serving with grace in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion James Dickey Post #23 and attending services at Center Street Church in Lucasville.

Elsie's spirit, full of life and compassion, shall remain in the hearts of those who had the fortune to know her. A woman of remarkable strength, her legacy is woven through each child she nurtured and every friendship she cultivated.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hillview or SOMC Hospice in memory of Elsie.

As we bid farewell to this wonderful soul, we are reminded of the love she shared and the lives she touched. May her journey onward be gentle, warm, and forever illuminated by the light she gave to those around her.
