Brenda Karen Hughes, a beloved wife, mother, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully from natural causes on January 14, 2026, at the age of 72. She was born on February 8, 1953, in Ashland, Kentucky, and spent her life nurturing the minds of young learners and creating a loving home for her family in Franklin Furnace, Ohio.
Brenda's journey in education began with her master's degree and spanned over thirty years, during which she dedicated her life to teaching fifth graders and later as a Title I reading teacher at Pritchard Elementary in Carter County, Kentucky. She was a proud member of the teachers union and was known for her patience, dedication, and unwavering support for her students. Her impact on the lives of children extended far beyond the classroom, as she truly cherished each moment spent helping them grow.
Her family was the cornerstone of her existence. Brenda is survived by her loving husband, William "Bill" Hughes, her cherished daughter, Jamie (Kenneth) Stroud of Rush, KY, Jennifer (Shad) Wheller of Georgetown, KY, daughter in law, Lynn Parsons of Grayson, KY, brother Terry (Mary) Marshall of Grayson, KY, step sister Sheri (Gary) Griffieth of Winchester, KY; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She found immense joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren, always making room for laughter and love within her home.
Brenda was a woman of many passions. She had a knack for decorating her home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflected her vibrant personality. She enjoyed solving puzzles and took pride in her beautiful flower gardens, which bloomed with life and color, much like her nurturing spirit. Additionally, she found joy in the nostalgic charm of old TV shows like "Leave It to Beaver," "Father Knows Best," and films featuring Doris Day. Classic country and gospel music filled her home, resonating with the love she shared with those around her.
Brenda was a faithful member of her local church in Franklin Furnace, where she deepened her beliefs and connected with her community. She will be remembered not just for her accomplishments in education but for the profound love she shared with her family and friends. Her warm-hearted nature and positive outlook on life touched the lives of all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Dixie (Nee Reffett) Watts, one son, Robert Parsons, and one grandson Eddie "Moe" Fowler.
