In Memory Of Beverly Tierney Marshall

Contentedly and peacefully, on March 14, 2023, at age 95, Beverly Tierney Marshall, beloved wife of John B. Marshall (Jack), daughter of the late John J. Tierney and Lena Gray Tierney, was called home. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Robert.

Beverly was born May 28, 1927. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1945 and attended Ohio Wesleyan University until WWII brought her back to Portsmouth to help with the war effort by becoming a teller with the bank her father presided over. On August 12, 1950, she married Jack and shared 66 years of their lives together until his death in 2017.

She is survived by her three children, Rebecca Smith (Geoffrey), John B. Marshall, Jr. (Julie) and William T. Marshall. She was a devoted and much treasured grandmother to Tierney Peters (Jason), Grace Smith, Ty Marshall (Zi), Kaylin Marshall (Courtney), Angela Marshall and Chase Marshall. Bev was blessed with great-grandchildren, Jackson and Ellory Peters and Emma and Will Marshall along with her adored nieces and nephews.

Among the many pleasures in her life, she was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed participating as well as spectating and was accomplished at tennis, golf, biking, water skiing, swimming and boating and even put in a valiant effort at horseback riding and cattle herding. She was an avid football fan and loved her Buckeyes and Bengals. As an added bonus, she was a skilled and artful gardener and an excellent cook.

Bev also selflessly gave countless hours and was involved in many civic organizations, reflecting her faithful commitment to helping her community. Among them as an Officer of Twig 13, Mercy Hospital, President of Coterie at SOMC, Elder of Second Presbyterian Church, member of the Board of Directors for the Alden B. Oaks Scholarship Fund, President of Lawyer's Wives Club, the Women's Association of Second Presbyterian Church and a Board member of the YMCA. She was also on the Founding Committee for the Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center and did fundraising for the Heart, Lung and Cancer Associations.

She and Jack traveled far and wide and were thankful for their lovely experiences. Bev greatly valued the many friendships she enjoyed with her wonderful array of friends and loved her book clubs and playing bridge.

In her 95 years, Beverly experienced great joy and tragedy and handled it all with aplomb. She guided her family and modeled strength as she practiced her strong faith on a daily basis. She was ever generous, had an indomitable spirit and was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, an inspiration to many. However, of utmost importance was being with her family. When Jack retired as judge, they spent many winters in Palm Desert, CA, where, with their children and grandchildren, they made cherished friendships and shared many family adventures, indelible memories and a legacy of love.

The family would like to thank all those who so devotedly cared for her in her declining days and whom she loved, Karen Thompson, Sharma Brown, the staff at Hillview Retirement Center and Hospice, and Kima Sparks who not only cared for her but also her beloved dog, Chewy.

A Memorial Service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 11:00 am. A reception at the church will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Hillview Retirement Center or Hospice at SOMC. In honor of Beverly's spirit, we ask that you perform an act of kindness and generosity for someone.
