Annabel Baker Olin Floyd, a resident of Portsmouth area for more than 40 years, died November 24, 2023, Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Ann grew up in Corning, NY, graduating, one of 3 valedictorians of her Corning Free Academy class. She was an accomplished pianist, musician (played coronet in CFA band and CFA Melodiers dance band, athlete and an avid swimmer. In her high school junior year, she was awarded the Elmira College Key scholarship, then attended as a chemistry major, traveled and sang with the college Twain Tones, competed with the college synchronized swimming and fencing teams. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She relocated to Lancaster, Ohio where her parents had moved. There she life guarded and taught swimming lessons, finding she had a gift of teaching young children. She graduated from Ohio University with a degree in elementary education.

The tragedy of mental illness started just as she was beginning her teaching career.  Schizophrenia not only robbed her of a normal life, but deprived society of her contributions.

With the exception of the two marriages, Ann has spent most of her adult life in group homes. She was known for her friendliness, kindness and generosity.

She was predeceased by her parents Houston and Margaret Baker, her sister Katherine Riley, her brother Winton Baker, her first loving husband, Kenneth Olin, and second husband, William Floyd.

 

She is survived by her brother Houston Baker, Jr. (Judith), and sister Sarah Nooden (Larry), niece Linnea (Andy) Nooden and 10 other nieces and nephews. The family is thankful for the care her guardians, Cynthia Gerlach, and Mona Sprague, gave her and the staffs at Country Living (James and Becky Montler), Friendship, Ohio, and Bridgeport 360 Health Center, Portsmouth for her care in her later years.

 

Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will take place at a future date at the Granger, Indiana Baker family plot.
